Guidelines for Guest Editors of Special Issues

EJTS welcomes proposals for special issues of the journal within the fields of humanities and social sciences. Although the main focus of EJTS is Turkey and Turkish studies, comparative approaches are welcome (for more details on EJTS editorial policy, see here).

The proposal – including a description of the project (2,000-5,000 words) and either abstracts of planned contributions or a call for papers – should be submitted to the editorial board. The editorial board may express its interest in the proposal but a final decision regarding acceptance will be based on submission of the whole issue to the editorial board, as well as on the peer review of each submitted paper.

If the proposal does not yet include the papers, they can be solicited through various methods. A call for papers can be placed on the EJTS web site and circulated amongst relevant forums. Possible contributors may also be assembled by holding a workshop or conference; in this case, a call for papers may not be necessary.

A special issue typically consists of 6-9 papers. Paper length is flexible, given the internet-based medium of the journal, but should normally be about 60,000 characters. (For more details, see here). Papers may be in French, Turkish, English, or German.

EJTS normally publishes two special issues a year, one in the spring and one in the fall. In general, the articles should be received no later than 6 months prior to the publication date in order to allow for peer review and editing. Decisions about whether or not to send papers out for review are made by the editorial board in conjunction with the guest editor.

Each paper is reviewed anonymously by two external referees, chosen by the editorial board in consultation with the guest editor. Referees are usually expected to deliver their report within one month of the paper’s acceptance. Referees recommend the rejection, acceptance, or revision of the submitted paper. Once received, the referee reports are passed along to the authors, who are given up to one month to revise and resubmit their work.

The final publication stages are taken care of by the EJTS editorial board.
